Physical Examination of the Rib Cage Wall by the Speech-Language Pathologist

Thomas J. Hixon 1
Jeannette D. Hoit 1

1 National Center for Neurogenic Communication Disorders, The University of Arizona, Tucson

A protocol is offered for use by the speech-language pathologist in conducting a physical examination of the rib cage wall. Structural and performance observations are used to reveal possible rib cage wall dysfunction. A worksheet is provided to guide the examiner. The present protocol, together with those presented in companion publications on the diaphragm (Hixon & Hoit, 1998) and the abdominal wall (Hixon & Hoit, 1999), provide the bases for a comprehensive physical examination of the status and function of the breathing apparatus by the speech-language pathologist.

Key Words: rib cage wall, physical examination, protocol, worksheet
