Purpose: To suggest that ongoing self-reflection sharpens clinical performance.
Method: This is an amplifying, affirming response to "An Existential Framework for Understanding the Counseling Needs of Clients" (C. S. Spillers, 2007).
Results: Attending skills improve as we increase self-awareness.
Conclusion: By becoming increasingly aware of our beliefs about ourselves, others, and the world around us that fashion our actions and feelings, we become increasingly able to distinguish clients' and caregivers' cares, concerns, and lives from projections of our own.
Key Words: counseling, therapy, clinical issues
